New ISC Board Member Brian Tune Envisions Better Communication between Sculptors and Architects

Press Release, June 3, 2002

Brian L. Tune, AIA joins the ISC Board, not only as a representative of the architecture profession, but with high ambitions to create better communication between the two professions of architecture and sculpture.

“I want to explore ways that the ISC Board can open channels of communication between architects and sculptors,” said Tune. “Although these two groups have similar goals, there often seems to be an invisible wall between the professions.”

Having commissioned sculpture for his own projects, Tune feels strongly about how sculptors and architects should collaborate. “I learned the hard way that I should have had the sculptor in my design process much earlier,” he said. “The architect wants to create space for people and the sculptor wants to enliven that space with art. It’s more rewarding for everyone -- including the end user -- if the architect and sculptor work together from the outset, rather than forcing the sculptor to react to an existing, completed space.”

Tune is a Registered Architect practicing in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He is president of Tune Design Architecture, PC, a firm specializing in commercial and governmental office buildings, mission-critical facilities such as data centers, detention facilities, residential and retail developments, private residences and historic preservation projects. In addition to maintaining a strong local and regional practice in Tennessee, the firm works with national and international clients such as IBM, Williams-Sonoma, Tyco, MGM Studios and TD Waterhouse on projects throughout the United States, Europe and the Middle East.

Tune created two scholarship funds for students of the University of Kentucky College of Architecture. He is a board member of The Association for Visual Artists in Chattanooga. Since 1994 he has been founder and president of The Home Place, a Chattanooga nonprofit organization that provides housing and supportive care for homeless people living with HIV and AIDS.
